TechMap seminar – “social media is sh*t” (07/02/2012)
Last night I was on the speaker panel of TechMap seminar discussing a very interesting presentation by Luke Tipping called 'Social Media is Sh*t'. While a little controversial and headline grabbing, essentially the presentation looked at how social media is, for many of us, fast becoming all pervasive and taking over and dictating our lives.
Luke's actually a strong advocate of social media - as am I. He uses it, his job depends on it and he sees the real value in it. But, just because something has value, doesn’t mean it should take over our lives. Surely, the value of it diminishes if our life in more broad terms becomes less rich because of it?
How many of us really do get that critical sign off from the client via email just before 11.30pm? Until I work as a heart surgeon or in emergency services, I'm no longer convinced I need to look at my Blackberry every three minutes in the evening. There is a fine line, but I know how responsive we already are at amplifier so I’m sure the world will wait until the morning for a more thoughtful, rested and contented me. How about you? Try it - switch off from social media activity at 7pm for a few nights and see the world of positive difference it makes to your world, your social relationships and your social lives.
